There are two kinds of place in Ontario that give the G1 knowledge test:
- A DriveTest centre. This is where most people go. According to Ontario.ca, you don't need an appointment to take the knowledge test at a DriveTest centre.
- ServiceOntario at Bay and College in downtown Toronto. This location takes knowledge tests by appointment only.
The test can't be taken online. You write it in person, and the staff check your ID and do your vision test during the same visit.
Finding your nearest DriveTest centre
DriveTest, the company that runs the centres for the province, has a centre finder with addresses and opening hours for every location. It also shows how busy each centre is, so you can pick a quieter one if you have a choice.
Before you go, check:
- Opening hours. They can differ by day and by centre.
- The address. Centres sometimes move, and an old listing may point to the wrong place.
- Current wait times. Late mornings and the first days after a school break are usually busiest.
When you do need an appointment
- Verbal tests. DriveTest gives verbal knowledge tests at its centres by appointment only.
- The Bay and College location. Appointments only, as above.
- Road tests. The G2 and G road tests are booked, online or by phone with DriveTest. They are not the same visit as the G1.
What happens on the day
- You show your ID at the counter and fill in the application.
- You pay the application and test fees. See what to bring to the G1 test for the ID and payment checklist.
- You take the vision test.
- You sit the knowledge test. It has two sections, road signs and rules of the road, and you need 16 out of 20 in each.
- If you pass, you get your G1 licence and photo taken the same visit.
Tips for choosing a centre
- Pick the centre you can reach easily. You will probably go back there for your G2 road test too.
- Go early in the day if you can, so a long queue doesn't leave you rushed.
- Do a few sign questions on the bus or while you wait.
Details such as fees, opening hours and ID lists change. Always check the official DriveTest website before you go.
