How Much Is the G1 Test in Ontario?
Last updated: · Based on the Official MTO Driver's Handbook, explained in our own words
The G1 test costs $159.75, paid when you apply. That price is a package: it also covers your first G2 road test and a five-year licence. Here's the full breakdown, and what retests add.
Ontario driver's licence fees
These are the Class G fees listed on DriveTest's fee page, which we checked on October 28, 2026. They are set by the Government of Ontario and include tax.
| What you pay for | Fee |
|---|---|
| G1 licence package (knowledge test, first G2 road test and a five-year licence) | $159.75 |
| Extra knowledge test attempt | $16.00 |
| G2 road test retest | $53.75 |
| G road test (for your full G) | $91.25 |
| Official MTO Driver's Handbook, printed (cash only at DriveTest) | $18.00 |
If you pass everything the first time, getting a full G costs $251: $159.75 for the G1 package plus $91.25 for the G road test. The handbook is also free to read online.
How to pay
DriveTest centres take cash, Visa, Mastercard, debit, certified cheques, bank drafts and money orders. Road tests are paid when you book, online or by phone with a credit card.
The costs people don't plan for
- Failing the knowledge test: $16 a try, plus another trip to the DriveTest centre and often a long wait.
- Failing the G2 road test: $53.75 for the retest, and you wait at least 10 days.
- Late cancellation or no-show: cancel a road test less than 48 hours ahead, arrive late or miss it, and you lose the fee, unless one of DriveTest's exceptions applies.
- An unfit car: if the examiner declares your road test "out of order" because the car doesn't meet the requirements, you lose half the fee.
Don't pay twice
The cheapest G1 test is the one you pass first time. You need 16 out of 20 in both the signs and rules sections, so practise until you're comfortably above that. Try our sample G1 questions, then check what to bring so you aren't turned away at the counter.
