G2 Licence Rules in Ontario, and How a G2 Differs From a G
Last updated: · Based on the Official MTO Driver's Handbook, explained in our own words
Passing your G2 road test gives you a lot more freedom, but you're still a novice driver. Here is what you can do now, which rules still apply, and what changes when you get your full G.
What you can do with a G2
According to Ontario.ca, a G2 driver can drive:
- without another experienced driver in the car
- on all Ontario roads, including 400-series highways and expressways
- at any time of day, in most cases
Rules that still apply to every G2 driver
- your blood-alcohol level must be zero
- you can carry only as many passengers as there are working seatbelts
- the lower novice demerit point limits and escalating penalties still apply. See demerit points for new drivers
Extra rules if you're 19 or under
Between midnight and 5 a.m.:
- for your first six months on a G2, you can carry only one passenger aged 19 or under
- after six months, you can carry up to three passengers aged 19 or under
These limits don't apply if a fully licensed driver with at least four years' experience is in the car, or if your passengers are immediate family.
Can you drive on the highway with a G2?
Yes. Unlike a G1, a G2 lets you drive on any Ontario road, including the 401, the QEW and other 400-series highways. That's also how you get ready for the G road test, which includes expressway driving, so get comfortable merging and changing lanes at highway speed during your G2 year.
G2 vs G: what's the difference?
| G2 | Full G | |
|---|---|---|
| Drive alone | Yes | Yes |
| 400-series highways | Yes | Yes |
| Blood alcohol | Zero | Zero if 21 or under; roadside penalties start at 0.05 |
| Late-night passengers (19 and under) | Limited | No limit beyond seatbelts |
| Demerit points before suspension | 9 | 15 |
| Escalating novice penalties | Yes | No |
You can take the G road test after 12 months on a G2. Remember the five-year limit: you need your full G within five years of getting your G1.
Frequently asked questions
Can you drive on the highway with a G2?
Yes. A G2 driver can drive on all Ontario roads, including 400-series highways and expressways, without another driver in the car.
Can a G2 driver drive alone?
Yes. You no longer need an accompanying driver once you pass the G2 road test.
How many passengers can a G2 driver have?
As many as there are working seatbelts. If you are 19 or under, between midnight and 5 a.m. you can carry only one passenger aged 19 or under for your first six months on a G2, then up to three, unless a fully licensed driver is with you or your passengers are immediate family.
Can a G2 driver drink any alcohol before driving?
No. G2 drivers must have a blood-alcohol level of zero, as must every driver 21 and under.
What is the difference between a G2 and a G licence?
A G2 is the second, still-novice level: zero alcohol, seatbelt passenger limits, extra rules for drivers 19 and under, and the lower novice demerit thresholds. A full G removes those conditions. You get it by passing the G road test after 12 months on a G2.
