G1 Test Questions and Answers
Last updated: · Based on the Official MTO Driver's Handbook, explained in our own words
Below are real questions from our G1 practice set, with the answers and an explanation for each. First, a quick look at how the Ontario knowledge test is set up, so you know what you're aiming for.

Start the practice testHow many questions are on the G1 test?
The G1 knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions in two sections, and each question has four possible answers:
- Road signs: 20 questions on what signs mean, plus their shapes and colours
- Rules of the road: 20 questions on licence conditions, right-of-way, speed limits, penalties and safe driving
You need at least 16 out of 20 in each section (80%). The sections are marked separately, so a perfect signs score can't make up for 15 on the rules. That's why most people who fail fail the rules section: the signs are easier to memorise.
Sample G1 questions with answers
Try each question before you open the answer. These are the same questions as the free practice set in Ontario Roadie.
1. Diamond-shaped signs with a yellow background are:
- Information signs
- Regulatory signs
- Temporary condition signs
- Warning signs
Show answer
Warning signs. Yellow diamonds warn of dangers or unusual conditions ahead, such as curves, hills or animal crossings.
2. What must your blood-alcohol level be while driving with a G1 licence?
- Less than 0.03%
- Less than 0.05%
- Less than 0.08%
- Zero
Show answer
Zero. G1 and G2 drivers must have a blood-alcohol level of zero, as must every driver 21 and under.
3. G1 drivers may not drive between:
- 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- Midnight and 5 a.m.
- Sunset and sunrise
Show answer
Midnight and 5 a.m.. Level One drivers must not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
4. In good conditions, the minimum safe following distance is:
- 1 car length
- 5 metres
- At least 1 second
- At least 2 seconds behind the vehicle ahead
Show answer
At least 2 seconds behind the vehicle ahead. Keep at least two seconds behind, and more in bad weather, behind motorcycles or large trucks, or with a heavy load.
5. Unless a sign says otherwise, the maximum speed in cities, towns and villages is:
- 40 km/h
- 50 km/h
- 60 km/h
- 70 km/h
Show answer
50 km/h. Without a posted sign the limit is 50 km/h in cities, towns and villages, and 80 km/h elsewhere.
6. What should you do when the light turns yellow (amber) as you approach?
- Always stop immediately
- Proceed; yellow means the same as green
- Speed up to beat the red
- Stop if you can do so safely; otherwise go with caution
Show answer
Stop if you can do so safely; otherwise go with caution. A yellow light means the red is about to appear. Stop if you can do so safely.
7. When may you turn right on a red light?
- After a complete stop, when the way is clear, unless a sign forbids it
- Any time traffic is light
- Never
- Only with a green arrow
Show answer
After a complete stop, when the way is clear, unless a sign forbids it. You may turn right on red after coming to a complete stop and making sure the way is clear, unless a sign says not to.
8. At an all-way stop, who has the right-of-way?
- The first vehicle to come to a complete stop
- The largest vehicle
- The vehicle on the main road
- The vehicle turning left
Show answer
The first vehicle to come to a complete stop. The first to stop goes first. If two stop at the same time, the one on the left yields to the one on the right.
9. When following a school bus with its red lights flashing, stop at least:
- 10 m behind it
- 20 m behind it
- 5 m behind it
- 50 m behind it
Show answer
20 m behind it. Stop at least 20 metres behind and stay stopped until the lights stop flashing and the stop arm folds away.
10. When an emergency vehicle with flashing lights or a siren approaches from any direction, you must:
- Keep driving at the same speed
- Pull to the right and come to a stop
- Speed up to get out of the way
- Stop wherever you are, even in an intersection
Show answer
Pull to the right and come to a stop. Clear the way and stop, but not in an intersection. Failing to do so brings a fine and three demerit points.
11. When entering a roundabout, you must:
- Go first if you are on the larger road
- Stop, even if it is clear
- Yield only to traffic on your right
- Yield to traffic already in the roundabout
Show answer
Yield to traffic already in the roundabout. Traffic in the roundabout has the right-of-way. Never change lanes inside a roundabout.
The topics that trip people up
Questions on these come up often, and they're easy to get wrong if you've only skimmed the handbook:
- Numbers. 20 m behind a school bus, at least 2 seconds following distance, 50 km/h in towns unless posted, 9 demerit points to suspend a novice licence. Make a list and drill it.
- G1 and G2 conditions. Zero alcohol, no driving midnight to 5 a.m., and who your accompanying driver can be. See G1 licence rules.
- Right-of-way. All-way stops, roundabouts, pedestrian crossovers and emergency vehicles. See stop signs and roundabouts.
- Penalties. Demerit points, suspensions and the extra sanctions for new drivers. See demerit points.
- Sign shapes. Octagon, inverted triangle, pentagon, diamond. See Ontario road signs.
How to study so the answers stick
- Read the Official MTO Driver's Handbook once, all the way through. Every question comes from it.
- Take a practice test without looking anything up, to find out what you actually remember.
- Go back over only the questions you missed, and read the explanation for each one.
- Repeat until you're scoring 18 or more in both sections, not just 16.
Ontario Roadie adds one more step: you drive past the signs in a 3D Ontario town and get quizzed on them as you go, which helps them stick better than flashcards. Ready for test day? Check what to bring and what it costs.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the G1 test?
Forty multiple-choice questions in two sections: 20 on road signs and 20 on rules of the road. Each question has four possible answers.
What is the pass mark for the G1 test?
You need at least 16 out of 20 (80%) in each section. The sections are marked separately, so a perfect signs score does not make up for 15 out of 20 on the rules.
Are the G1 test questions the same every time?
No. Each test draws its questions from a larger bank, so you will not see the same 40 twice. Learn the rule behind each answer instead of memorising answer letters.
Where do G1 test questions come from?
From the Official MTO Driver's Handbook. Every question tests something written in it: road signs, licence rules, right-of-way, speed limits, penalties and safe driving.
What happens if I fail the G1 test?
You can try again. Each extra knowledge test attempt costs $16 at DriveTest. Practise the section you failed before you go back.
